Rocky Horror Essay

Stay Sane Inside Insanity

Don’t dream it, be it, words that The Rocky Horror Picture Show tells each person that watches it. It’s a comedic portrayal of the gay and transgender culture, a symbol of LGBT themes, and place for musical junkies. Rocky Horror is a film that lets the audience participate along with it but most of all it’s a place for people, who feel that they’re too weird, too on the outside to fully embrace themselves without judgment. But RHPS is more than just a movie, it’s an outlet for creativity and it’s a place where you feel at home.

My first Rocky showing was three years ago and I was beyond mortified. At first I was told nothing about this cult classic and was forced into a car and was told I couldn’t escape. When we arrived people were dressed in corsets, fishnets, top hats, and four inch platform heals and I immediately ran for the door, at this time I couldn’t accept the unusual people that were standing next to me in the lobby. As soon as the clock hit midnight I was rushed into the theatre and shortly after realized that the movie was about an alien transvestite that tries to seduce a newly engaged couple and bring to life a man while singing. I mean who wouldn’t be a little scared? But while sitting in the theatre I noticed how comfortable everyone was with each other and being kidnapped didn’t matter much anymore. I realized that everyone actually accepted each other and I had never seen that before. They accepted the man performing on stage that was dressed in a corset and fishnets and the woman at the back of the theatre that was screaming callback lines and throwing rice at the screen.

Two years later I attended another showing, bracing myself for what was about to come. When I walked through those theatre doors I realized what a fool I was in the past soon feel in love with the show. I come back every month because it reminds me that it’s okay to be different. I now work with the cast and they have accepted me as one of their own, hoping I join them when I turn seventeen. I’ve already performed a few times before because I feel confident because no matter what you look like people always cheer and nothing else matters. This group is about love, acceptance and belonging so I ask each of you to look up this cult classic and give new things a chance no matter how strange they may be, you could come to love it.
